The Garden Project administers a field gleaning program in the Lansing area. Fresh produce, which would otherwise go to waste, is harvested by volunteers to help feed the hungry. The Garden Project organizes crews of volunteers to harvest crops at the request of area growers. The food is then distributed by staff to food pantries, human service organizations, residents of subsidized housing and other in need.

Here's how to join in:

STEP 1) Read the Gleaning Volunteer Guidelines

STEP 2) Complete the Gleaner Registration

We encourage you to speak directly with a staff member if you have questions about helping to glean or receiving gleaned food. Call (517) 853-7809 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Through the gleaning program, The Garden Project harvests and distributes LOTS of food each year.

HOW MUCH FOOD DO WE RESCUE?

We've been at since 1983--since then we've harvested over 5 million pounds of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Here's a sample of our stats from recent years...

2010 Gleaning is currently underway. Sign up to help above.

2009: over 340,000 pounds of food.

2008: over 280,000 pounds of food.

2007: over 255,000 pounds of food.

Another great way to rescue and deliver food is with our sister program, FOOD MOVERS!

Food Movers rescues prepared, perishable and other foods for distribution.  Read more about Food Movers.
